The question whether the sea-ice affects the storm tracks and statistics is central for any link between seasonal predictability and sea-ice. Low temperatures during summer is often associated with low pressure and cloudiness (e.g. due to blocking of the sun and precipitation - increased evaporation associated with wet surface), whereas high temperatures are favoured by high-pressure conditions. Furthermore, the cyclones play a role in the heat transport in the mid-latitudes ('eddy heat transport'). Through the CCI-meyhod (Benestad & Chen, 2006), we hope to look at both cyclones as well as anti-cyclones and their relationship with the sea-ice in a set of numerical experiments. The animation on the left shows the sea level pressure (SLP) from one of the 5-month simulations. Blue colour shows low pressure system and red high pressure. The CCI identifies the position, depth, and size of these, as well as the associated gradient winds.
