For evaluation and testing purposes COST 733 has developed dataset that consists of catalogues for 27 different weather type classification methods. These methods are applied in various setups, so currently the dataset consist of 73 catalogoues! The catalogues are all estimated using data from ERA40. [Read more about the classifications].
21 of the methods are scalable, and therefore applicable to any region. In COST33, 12 domain over Europe are defined, in order to test and evaluate the classifications and classifications principles for all regions of Europe. [Read more about the domains]
The remaining 6 classifications are developed for specific regions, and are often manual/subjective classifications. They are inlcuded in the COST733 dataset for comparison, and because they have been (and are) widely applied as weather type information. These methods include the Grosswetterlagen by Hess and Brezowsky and the Lamb weather types for the British Isles.
